Baseball Pitching Fundamentals
The major difference between "great" and "good" baseball pitchers at any level of play is that both have approximately the same inherent skills and knowledge of the fundamentals of pitching, but the great pitchers always work harder and longer to master, fine-tune and use those skills and that knowledge. The best pitchers have more commitment to excel that the others.
This website will give you the information and the instructions on how to use that information to be a successful pitcher. But you have to put this information to use to be successful. Otherwise, you’re just going to be another thrower. No one else buy you can make you an efficient, knowledgeable and consistant pitcher. And along with those three qualities comes success.
Baseball Pitches
I know there are a lot of different baseball pitches that pitchers want to throw, but the three most important are the fastball, change up and breaking ball (curveball or slider). I get bombarded with requests on how to throw different pitches, but my answer is always the same: You show me over a period of time that you can throw strikes with these three pitches, and then I’ll show you how to throw the others.
In any game, you’re going to throw fastballs about 80% of the time. And if you can’t throw to a hitter’s weakness at least 90% of the time, you’re not going to be in the game long enough to throw any other pitches. Notice that I qualified my statement as throwing to a "hitter’s weakness." The higher you go in baseball, the smaller the hitter’s weakness becomes. Unless you can throw over 92 mph, you had better have some good control! That’s why I teach my pitchers to throw three basic pitches, and not four, five or six. I’d rather you be able to throw three baseball pitches exactly where you want instead of five pitches in the vicinity of where you want.
Baseball Pitching Mechanics
Without proper baseball pitching mechanics, you’ll never become a winner. By "mechanics" I mean the basic skills and techniques you’ve got to master before and during the act of firing a baseball toward the plate. Quality pitching mechanics permits the pitcher to get maximum momentum, movement, location and velocity out of each pitch.
Remember this, too: pitching longevity and long-term success on the pitcher’s mound comes from applying efficient baseball pitching mechanics and building functional strength and power in your core and lower body. Pitching mechanics are the cornerstone for this foundation; great mechanics mean a player has a better chance to become a great pitcher, develop above-average pitching velocity, and execute a game plan.
Baseball Pitching Drills
Baseball pitching drills are tremendously important as a compliment to any of the skills taught on the mound. The drills for pitching reinforce the correct techniques and enable pitchers to have fun while practicing pitching. It’s important to include helpful drills as a reinforcement and teaching progression at pratices.
Baseball Pitching Grips
To win as a pitcher, you need to be in command of how to throw a fastball, how to throw a change up and how to throw a breaking ball, such as how to throw a curve ball or how to throw a slider. Building your arsenal means conducting a careful study of each pitch, what it can do and how to throw it. Throwing different pitches at different speeds to different locations while having a sequence or progression in mind is what the true art of pitching is all about.
Baseball Pitching Workouts
Don’t ever kid yourself: Conditioning is probably one of the most important aspects of being a successful pitcher. The reason conditioning and pitching workouts are so important is because the legs are the most important factor in the pitching motion. They must give the body and arm a consistent and solid base on every pitch. When the legs become tired, the knees give, which directly impacts the bracing action of the stride landing leg. That changes the release point on each throw thereby seriously affecting a pitcher’s control. As a baseball pitcher, you must increase your strength, joint flexibility and cardiovascular stamina to reach you maximum potential. Pitching workouts and baseball pitching strength and conditioning is the way to achieve this.
Mental Side of Pitching
If given a written test on baseball, most high school pitchers could probably pass it with flying colors. However, baseball is not played in a classroom with a pencil. It is played in a stressful situation atmosphere with instantaneous decisions needed every few seconds. What makes baseball so easy, but yet so hard, is that the criteria to be successful in baseball is not just to be knowledgeable, but you must posses the mental toughness to use that knowledge more efficiently than your opponent. In other words, to be a winner on the pitcher’s mound, it starts with the mental game.
